Yankee Stadium: Home Plate (Panoramic)

New York Giants Game

The blue Yankee Stadium letters over the main gate are the same letters that first appeared there in white in the early 1960s.

The original Yankee Stadium, located at East 161st Street and River Avenue, served as the home baseball park of Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees from 1923 to 1973 and, after extensive renovations, from 1976 to 2008. Nicknamed "The House that Ruth Built", it was the first three-tiered sports facility in the United States and one of the first baseball parks to be given the lasting title of stadium. Yankee Stadium hosted 6,581 Yankees regular season home games, and 37 World Series during its 85-year history. Yankee Stadium was the home of the National Football League’s New York Giants from 1956-1973, before they relocated ultimately to Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands, including the 1958 NFL championship game, and other short-lived professional football franchises including the three incarnations of the AFL’s New York Yankees (1926, 1936-37, 1941), the AAFC’s New York Yankees (1946-49), the NFL’s New York Yanks (1950-51). It hosted three papal masses–Pope Paul VI (1965), Pope John Paul II (1979), and Pope Benedict XVI (2008); thirty championship prizefights–including Joe Louis-Max Schmeling and Muhammad Ali-Ken Norton; two professional soccer franchies–the USA/NASL’s New York Generals (1967-68) and the NASL’s New York Cosmos (1971, 1976); and college football–including the annual Notre Dame-Army game from 1925 through 1947.

The Yankees had shared the Polo Grounds with the New York Giants since 1913, but strained relations between the two teams led owners Tillinghast L’Hommedieu Huston and Jacob Ruppert to build their own stadium on a 10-acre lumberyard within sight of Coogan’s Bluff. Originally designed by Osborn Engineering and built by the White Construction Company at a cost of .5 million, the stadium opened on April 18, 1923, with the Yankees beating the Boston Red Sox 4-1. By the late 1960s, the stadium’s condition had badly deteriorated. After the stadium was purchased by the City of New York in 1972, it closed for a two-year facelift following the 1973 season, with the Yankees taking up temporary residence at Shea
Stadium
in the interim. The renovations by Praeger-Kavanaugh-Waterbury significantly altered the appearance of the stadium. 118 columns reinforcing each tier of the grandstand were removed, the Stadium’s roof, including its distinctive 15-foot copper frieze, was replaced by a new upper shell, and a white painted concrete replica of the frieze was added atop the wall encircling the bleachers. The Stadium’s playing field was lowered and shortened, with the monuments once in play relgated to a newly created Monument Park.

In 2006, the Yankees began construction on a new .8 billion stadium in adjacent public parkland, which opened with the 2009 season. The final game at the stadium was held on September 21, 2008, with the Yankees beating the Baltimore Orioles 7-3.

In 2007, Yankee Stadium was ranked #84 on the AIA 150 America’s Favorite Architecture list.

The Big Hoot 2015 – 63. Spotting and Jotting in Birmingham

New York Giants Logo

Matt finds owls “absolutely bonkers” and a great inspiration for creativity. He connects his love of street art and graffiti with his passion for watching and painting birds. Here, he features many of Birmingham’s species – in profile and front-on, while on the owl’s wings, a hungry bird snatches a fish supper! A full-flight, night owl also makes a striking appearance.

Artist: Matt Sewell
Globally acclaimed artist, author and illustrator, Matt Sewell, from Shrewsbury, has been described as the ‘Banksy of the bird world’! Matt has always experimented with different canvases, including T-shirts, posters, interiors and walls, and he now adds owl sculptures to his repertoire!
He has illustrated for the Guardian newspaper and Barbour (amongst many others), painted underpasses for the RSPB, and exhibited in London, Manchester, New York, Tokyo and Paris – as well as being an avid ornithologist and regular contributor to the Caught by The River website (he also designed their logo). He was formerly an artist in residence on BBC Two’s hit show, Spring Watch.
Matt has illustrated and written a series of bird-themed books, including Our Garden Birds, Our Woodland Birds and his latest book, Owls – our most enchanting bird, which is all about his fabulous, eagle-eyed friends. It sold 7,000 copies in its first week!

The Big Hoot captured the imagination of everyone in Birmingham and beyond, with hundreds of thousands of people taking to the streets with their Big Hoot Trail maps to explore the colourful invasion of individually designed owls. Taking in the city’s 10 districts, tourists and residents alike enjoyed their owl adventure, discovering and celebrating the extraordinary creativity produced by many of Birmingham’s artistic community and over 25,000 young people.

The Big Hoot owls went under the hammer on 15 October 2015 at The Big Hoot auction sponsored by Vodafone and we are thrilled to have smashed our target by raising the incredible sum of £508,035!

The money raised from the auction will support Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity’s £3.65m Star Appeal. This appeal will enable us to create a first of its kind, a Rare Diseases Centre in the UK specifically for children. It will provide co-ordinated care, treatment, support and most importantly hope to children and families living with a rare or undiagnosed condition.

In addition the auction raised £15,000 for G’owl’d by Temper with proceeds going to Edward’s Trust, and £7,800 for Fleet and Free with proceeds going to Birchfield Harriers.

So thank you – we simply couldn’t have done it without you.

Artists have played a major role in The Big Hoot, creating almost 100 owl sculptures. We would like to thank all the artists for their incredible creativity and hard work.
Professional artists from Birmingham, the wider Midlands region and further afield have created extraordinary giant owls that are all unique in style and character and represent the city’s creativity, history and heritage, music, fashion, architecture and attractions.
Birmingham is home to a wealth of artistic and creative individuals and communities and many award-winning and nationally and internationally acclaimed artists. We are delighted with the response from Birmingham’s creative community and are thrilled to work in collaboration with them to transform the streets, squares and parks of the city.
For five months artists have been creating owls in their studios, at home and in The Big Hoot Artists’ Studio at the Custard Factory in Digbeth. Their inspiring and innovative designs have been realised in genres including graffiti, illustration, fine art, graphics, typography, mosaic and new media. They have worked with both community groups and with corporates to realise ideas and create their stunning designs.
The Big Hoot not only provides a high quality and ambitious free public event for families but also supports the creativity of artists and celebrates talent and diversity. The Big Hoot has provided an inspiring relationship between the city and the arts.
The artists have also reached out to communities enabling more people to participate in the arts, to experience working with professional artists and to be inspiring and inspired. From the north to the south of the city residents groups, youth groups and older peoples’ groups have been collaborating with artists to generate ideas, design and create owls for The Big Hoot.
Creativity is everywhere but the opportunity to participate is not. A range of activities have been programmed within Birmingham’s diverse communities and people from the age of 3 – 97 and from wards within the city boundaries have contributed to The Big Hoot and helped make the event extraordinary. Our projects have seen artists working with hundreds of residents and community members including children in looked after care, older peoples’ clubs, young people and residents organisations to design and decorate the owls displayed as part of the 10 week public event.
